Itinerary

Upon your arrival at the Pisa Airport or La Spezia Centrale Station, you will find an Italy-Trails representative who will welcome you and give you the travel material. You will then continue to the hotel where you will be staying to store your luggage and, depending on your arrival time, enjoy a first walk through the pedestrian streets of the center of La Spezia, going as far as the Morin Promenade, a popular boardwalk among the residents. You can go up the city lift (or climb the historic staircase) to the San Giorgio Castle, from whose terrace you will enjoy a 180-degree view of the city and its Gulf. Back down the lively Via del Prione avenue, you can linger in one of the many places specialized in aperitifs or taste the famous and tasty farinata, the all-Ligurian street food based on chickpea flour. For dinner, a typical Ligurian restaurant awaits you where you will taste traditional Ligurian dishes accompanied by excellent regional wines. Night in the hotel in La Spezia.

In the morning, you will drive your car to visit a small jewel with a Tuscan atmosphere in the heart of the Val di Magra, or the Magra Valley,  where your guide will help you discover the corners and the stories of an elegant, little town, once crossed by pilgrims along the Via Francigena. The village today stands out for its beautiful buildings adorned with wrought iron railings, for the abundant amount of antique shops and for a monument of Garibaldi unique in its kind. Of course, you cannot miss a visit to the Cathedral, a treasure chest of very precious resources including a painted cross dating back to the twelfth century, the oldest in Italy. At the end of the visit, you will take a seat in a historic restaurant where you will taste a dessert of ancient tradition (according to some, even from the Roman era), appreciated even by those who follow a vegan diet thanks to the absence of dairy products and other animal fats among its ingredients. After saying goodbye to your guide, you will continue your day by going inside a regional natural park up to a small ancient village located on top of the Caprione Promontory, where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the Gulf of La Spezia and the Apuan Alps. After a walk in the characteristic alleys of this village, included among the “most beautiful villages in Italy”, you can continue to a beautiful historic town overlooking the bay, historically known as the “Gulf of Poets” because of its famous visitors including the English romantic poets Lord Byron and PB Shelley. We recommend a walk to the castle overlooking the village, initially built by the Pisans and completed by the Genoese in the 13th century, as well as a walk to the marina where you can enjoy an excellent aperitif accompanied by muscles and local white wine in one of the characteristic kiosks in front of the landing place for fishermen’s boats. Night in hotel in La Spezia.

After breakfast, you will meet your guide to leave by train to discover one of the favorite destinations for tourists from all over the world: the heroic vineyards – rows of vines cultivated on surprising terraces that are supported by dry stone walls. With the daily train ticket, the Cinque Terre Card, you can move freely and quickly between the villages located along this narrow strip of coast, UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park. You will walk among the panoramic vineyards and the narrow alleys of two delightful seaside villages up to their small and rocky harbors, then reaching one of the oldest and most important towns on the coast, famous for its colorful houses overlooking the sea. With its bay sheltered and hidden and the church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia, the village of Belforte is considered by many to be the pearl of the Cinque Terre, thanks to the excellent state of conservation of its historic buildings. Once you arrive in the largest town of the Cinque Terre, famous for its narrow alleys and the beautiful port, be sure to allow yourself a stop for a professional wine tasting, accompanied by a light lunch dedicated to local products to fully understand not only the close relationship of the winemakers with these impervious hills, but also the perfect combinations of food and wine. This is also the only one of the Cinque Terre villages where there is a beach and therefore it is the ideal stop for a swim or just for a walk on the water’s edge. In the afternoon, you can spend a few more hours exploring Cinque Terre independently with a boat ride to the most hidden coves, or by reaching the most remote of its villages, located on a rocky spur and reachable, once you arrive at the station, by climbing up a famous panoramic staircase or by the shuttle buses included in the Cinque Terre Card. Night in hotel in La Spezia.
