Upon your arrival at the Genoa airport or station, you will find an Italy-Trails representative who will welcome you and give you the travel material. You will continue to the hotel where you will be staying and, depending on your arrival time, you can organize your luggage and enjoy a first exploratory tour through the streets of the largest historic center in Europe. You will find the ancient historic shops where you can taste the typical Genoese focaccia and other delicacies of the local cuisine. Do not forget to look upwards and admire the numerous votive shrines, real works of art set like precious stones on the corners of the ancient buildings of the historic center. Before returning to the hotel, you can admire Genoa from above, going up an elevator to Spianata Castelletto, where the Liberty windows of the arrival station reveal the magnificent view towards the sea at sunset. For dinner, a typical Ligurian restaurant awaits you where you will taste traditional dishes accompanied by excellent regional wines.
Night in hotel in Genoa.
After breakfast, you will go to the meeting point where your guide will take you to visit the late-Renaissance and Baroque buildings that make up the System of the Palazzi dei Rolli, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2006 and which testify to the apex of the maritime and financial power of the city’s aristocracy. You will visit the most prestigious historic buildings that now house the main city museums where works by Guercino, Veronese, Anton Van Dyck, and Caravaggio are kept, including the famous Maddalena Penitente by Canova. You will continue the walking tour through the narrow alleys of the city that open into unexpected squares overlooked by a Gothic abbey and a splendid historic building with typical marble and slate banded facades. A little further on, you will be able to appreciate another amazing religious building, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which opens onto the square of the same name. Known as the Genoa Cathedral, the structure was created at the end of the year one thousand and rebuilt after a fire according to the Gothic declarations of 1296. In the underground rooms of the cathedral, masterpieces of goldsmithing and sacred art are exhibited in the Museum of the Treasures. You will then arrive to the majestic Palazzo Ducale complex and end the visit with helpful suggestions from your guide on where to go to enjoy an authentically Ligurian dinner. You will have time for a walk by the sea or if you prefer, a little shopping in the city streets. A dinner in a typical restaurant awaits you.
Night in hotel in Genoa.
After breakfast, you will go to the indicated address to collect your car to leave for Ventimiglia where you will arrive after about two hours of travel. Once you have checked in, you will leave your luggage at the hotel and begin the discovery of this small frontier town that contains the best of itself in the Vieille Ville area. Going up towards the medieval core of the city, you can enjoy a magnificent sea view of the Côte d’Azur, or Blue Coast, to the west and the beautiful beaches that wind up to Bordighera to the east. The majestic door of the old walls will introduce you to the square where the Romanesque style Cathedral stands, dating back to 1100. Continuing through the historic center, you will encounter another beautiful medieval church built in the same period and then modified in 1200. Between historic shops and glimpses of the sea, you will return to Ventimiglia where you can buy bus tickets that will take you to the promontory in ten minutes to enter one of the most enchanting botanical gardens in Europe. Founded in 1867, this paradise of scents and colors is home to thousands of botanical species which, thanks to the favorable microclimate, populate the terraces overlooking the sea. When the evening falls, you will dine typical Ligurian dishes and spend the night in a hotel/B&B in Ventimiglia.
