Arrival at Lamezia Terme airport where you will find an Italy Trails representative who will welcome you, give you the travel materials and accompany you to pick up your rental car. You will then set off on your journey along the plains of Saint Eufemia beside the coastline of the homonymous gulf overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea to reach the well-known town of Pizzo Calabro. Here, you will visit the beautiful Murat Castle, where the king of Naples was shot. Inside, the ancient prisons are still intact and with the help of props and mannequins, it will be possible to relive the last days of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. The Cathedral and the many picturesque alleys of the center are evocative, flanked by numerous souvenir shops and the beautiful city beach. One kilometer from the center, it is possible to visit the small Church of Piedigrotta, truly unique in its kind, excavated in a cave on the sea and inside which there are numerous sacred sculptures, testimony of local tradition and legends with a strong emotional impact. The town is also famous for the historic Tartufo di Pizzo, an exquisite artisan ice cream that we recommend you try. Transfer to Tropea. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will take a guided tour of Tropea, a natural balcony on the Mediterranean, also known as the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, located on the splendid Coast of the Gods and a place of ancient legends and millenary history. The ancient part of the city is located on a terrace overlooking the sea. On a rock, there is a prehistoric Benedictine sanctuary, the Church of S. Maria dell’Isola. Famous above all for its white beach and turquoise sea, the city has a historic center full of noble palaces and the important Norman Cathedral where the sacred image of the Madonna of Romania is venerated. After visiting the enchanting city of Tropea, you will continue to Scilla, an ancient fishing village dominated by the Ruffo Castle, standing at the foot of this delightful fishing village located close to the sea. In the late afternoon, you will continue towards Reggio di Calabria. Dinner and overnight in the central Hotel Excelsior.
Today will be dedicated to visit Reggio Calabria, defined as the City of the Fata Morgana, due to a rare optical phenomenon that allows particular climatic and light conditions to see the city of Messina in detail beyond the strait, canceling the distance of the arm of the sea that separates the two cities. In the city that lies on this strait, it is possible to visit the National Archaeological Museum which, among the many discoveries in its ample collection, houses some of the few examples in the world of original 5th century Greek bronze sculptures: the famous Riace Bronzes that were found at sea in 1972. After, you can stroll along the elegant and long pedestrian area of Corso Garibaldi, see the monumental Cathedral and visit the Aragonese Castle. You can’t miss the promenade along the seafront, defined by D’Annunzio as the most beautiful kilometer in Italy. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
